Nationalities and Country Names in Korean

This lesson will learn about nationalities and country names in Korean.
Let's gets started with the list of country names~
First we'll cover the country names whose Korean name is totally different from their English names.

  • 한국 - South Korea
  • 일본 - Japan
  • 중국 - China
  • 태국 Thailand
  • 인도  India
  • 미국 America
  • 영국 United Kingdom
  • 독일 Germany
  • 호주 Australia
  • 북한 North Korea

Let's see some country names whose pronunciation is similar in both Korean and English. 

  • 러시아 Russia 
  • 프랑스 France
  • 베트남 Vietnam
  • 이탈리아 Italy

Now the list of countries whose names are pronounced very similar in both the languages. 

  • 말레이시아 Malaysia
  • 인도네시아 Indonesia
  • 멕시코 Mexico
  • 브라질 Brazil
  • 캐나다 Canada
  • 파키스탄 Pakistan
  • 네팔 Nepal
  • 우즈베키스탄 Uzbekistan

In order to find how to pronounce certain country names apart from the ones mentioned above. You can log on to endic.naver.com.
You can type the name of any country in English and it will show the results how the names are pronounced in Korean.
Let's see how to use the country names in conversation. If you might want to ask someone where they are from. 
You can say, 어느 나라 사람입니까 ? -On nara saram ibnikka ?

  • 어느 - Which
  • 나라 - country
  • 사람 - person

OR, 어디에서 왔어요 ? - Oddi-esso wasso-yo ?

  • 어디 - where
  • 왔다 - came

When someone asks you about your country. You can say,
저는 …………… 사람입니다.
OR, …………… 에서 왔어요.


You can place any country name in the space provided. For example :

  • 저는 인도 사람입니다. - I am Indian.
  • 인도에서 왔어요. - I came from India.
  • 저는 일본 사람입니다. - I am Japanese.
  • 일본에서 왔어요. - I came from Japan.
  • 저는 미국 사람입니다. - I am American.
  • 미국에서 왔어요. - I came from America.
