Let's learn how to use "V+는 것 같다 [Korean grammar]and make some example sentences.

V+는 것 같다 (Korean Grammar)

USE:

V+는 것 같다 Korean grammar pattern is used to express the speaker's guess or prediction. 

It is equal to "It seems, "I think" in English.

CONJUGATION RULE:

V+는 것 같다 grammar is used with verbs. The first step of ‘V+는 것 같다’ conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the base form of the verb.

 Take the stem of the verb and directly add V+는 것 같다 to that.

So let's take a verb 먹다(to eat). If you remove 다 from 먹다, 먹 (stem) is left. And then, Directly add 는 것 같다 to it.

so it becomes 먹는 것 같다.

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  • 민수 씨가 가는 것 같아요.
    (It seems like minsu is going home.)
  • 미나는 김밥을 먹는 것 같아요.
    (It looks like mina is eating Kimbap.)
  • 비가 오는 것 같아요.
    (It looks like its raining)
  • 앤디 씨가 숙제 하는 것 같아요.
    (It looks like andy is doing homework.)
  • 리나 씨가 커피를 마시는 것 같아요.
    (It looks like Rina is drinking Coffee.)
  • 어머니가 지금 자는 것 같아요.
    (It looks like mother is sleeping.)

"V+는 것 같다" can be used in the present, past and the future:

Let's take a common example to understand it better.

" 책을 읽다- To read a book" 

Now let's make the same sentence in present, past and future tenses.

-는 것 같다- PRESENT TENSE:
Example:
  • 책을 읽는 것 같아요. (It seems like he is reading a book.)
-ㄴ/은 것 같다 or 았/었을 것 같다- PAST TENSE:
Example:
  • 책을 읽은 것 같아요. (It seems like he was reading a book.)
-ㄹ/을 것 같다- FUTURE TENSE:
Example:
  • 책을 읽을 것 같아요. (It seems like he will read a book.)
