Let's learn how to use "V/Adj-(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 (알았다) [Korean Grammar]with some example sentences.

V/Adj- (으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 (알았다)[Korean Grammar]

USE:

The pattern "-(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 (알았다)" is used when a person want to express that he/she didn’t know or thought something differently about a situation.

  • 몰랐다 means "I didn’t know" or "I wasn’t aware."
  • 알았다 means "I thought (mistakenly)" or "I assumed."

CONJUGATION RULE:

To use "-(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 (알았다)" you need to conjugate the verb or adjective as shown below:

1. Past Tense:

Use "-(으)ㄴ 줄 몰랐다/알았다"

  • Add -은 줄- if the verb stem ends in a consonant.
  • Add -ㄴ 줄- if the verb stem ends in a vowel.

Example of Conjugation (Past):

  • 먹다 (to eat): 먹은 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know [they] ate.)
  • 가다 (to go): 간 줄 알았다 (I thought [they] went.)
  • 예쁘다 (to be pretty): 예쁜 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know it was pretty.)

2. Present Tense

Use "-는 줄 몰랐다/알았다"

  • Add -는 줄 directly after the verb stem.

Example of Conjugation (Present):

  • 먹다 (to eat): 먹는 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know [they] were eating.)
  • 공부하다 (to study): 공부하는 줄 알았다 (I thought [they] were studying.)
  • 비싸다 (to be expensive): 비싼 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know it was expensive.)

3. Future Tense:

Use "-(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다/알았다"

  • Add -을 줄- if the verb stem ends in a consonant.
  • Add -ㄹ 줄- if the verb stem ends in a vowel.

Example of Conjugation (Future):

  • 먹다 (to eat): 먹을 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know [they] would eat.)
  • 가다 (to go): 갈 줄 알았다 (I thought [they] would go.)
  • 춥다 (to be cold): 추울 줄 몰랐다 (I didn’t know it would be cold.)

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:


1. Past Tense:

  • 그는 간 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know he went.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि वह गया।
  • 시험이 쉬운 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought the test was easy.)
    मुझे लगा कि परीक्षा आसान थी।
  • 그 책이 재미없는 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know the book wasn’t fun.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि वह किताब मजेदार नहीं थी।
  • 그녀가 예쁜 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought she was pretty.)
    मुझे लगा कि वह सुंदर थी।
  • 가게가 벌써 닫은 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know the store was already closed.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि दुकान पहले ही बंद हो गई थी।

2. Present Tense:

  • 그가 지금 자는 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know he was sleeping.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि वह सो रहा है।
  • 그들이 공부하는 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought they were studying.)
    मुझे लगा कि वे पढ़ाई कर रहे हैं।
  • 버스가 오는 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know the bus was coming.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि बस आ रही है।
  • 그 물건이 비싼 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought that item was expensive.)
    मुझे लगा कि वह चीज़ महंगी है।
  • 친구가 집에 있는 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know my friend was at home.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि मेरा दोस्त घर पर है।

3. Future Tense:

  • 그가 이렇게 빨리 올 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know he would come so quickly.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि वह इतनी जल्दी आएगा।
  • 시험이 이렇게 쉬울 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought the test would be this easy.)
    मुझे लगा था कि परीक्षा इतनी आसान होगी।
  • 비가 올 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know it would rain.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि बारिश होगी।
  • 그 영화가 재미있을 줄 알았어요.
    (I thought the movie would be fun.)
    मुझे लगा था कि फिल्म मजेदार होगी।
  • 이 일이 이렇게 어려울 줄 몰랐어요.
    (I didn’t know this work would be this hard.)
    मुझे नहीं पता था कि यह काम इतना कठिन होगा।
