Let's learn how to use Korean grammar V + 아/어 보니까 with conjugation rules and some simple real-life examples.

V + 아/어 보니까 ("After doing (verb), I realized that…")

USE:

V + 아/어 보니까 grammer is very useful for expressing that you found out something or realized something based on your own experience.

It is equivalent to "After doing (verb), I realized that…" or "Because I tried  (verb), I found that…" in English.

It emphasizes that the speaker's understanding or discovery comes from their own experience. So, only after first hand expereince the speaker has come to a realization.

Brief Hindi Explanation -

 "V + 아/어 보니까" का मतलब है:

 "Karke dekha → Pata chala"

"यह करके देखा तो ऐसा लगा" ("Yeh karke dekha to aisa laga")
"कोशिश करने पर पता चला कि…" like this ?("Koshish karne par pata chala ki…")

CONJUGATION RULE:

V + 아/어 보니까  grammar is used with verbs. The first step of ‘V + 아/어 보니까’ conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the verb, Then you add 아/어 보니까 to the verb stem.

If verb stem ends is ㅏ or ㅗ you add - 아 보니까 ( 가다 - 가 보니까 )

For all other verbs stem add - 어 보니까 ( 먹다 - 먹어 보니까 )

EXAMPLE:

1. 한국 음식을 먹어 보니까 정말 맛있었어요. (After trying Korean food, I realized it was really delicious. )

2. 한국에 가 보니까 정말 아름다웠어요. (After going to  Korea, I realized that it was really beautiful.)

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  1.  시험 문제를 풀어 보니까 생각보다 어려웠어요.
    After trying to solve the exam questions, I found them more difficult than I expected.
  1. 운전을 해 보니까 생각보다 어렵지 않았어요.
    After trying driving, I found it wasn’t as hard as I thought.
  1. 직접 해 보니까 그 일이 그렇게 힘들지 않았어요.
    After doing it myself, I found the task wasn’t that hard.
  1. 새로운 식당 음식을 먹어 보니까 맛이 별로였어요.
    After trying the new restaurant’s food, I found the taste wasn’t so good.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The difference between -아/어 보니까 and just -아/어서:

  • -아/어 보니까 specifically implies personal experience and discovery after trying something.
  • -아/어 서 is more neutral and doesn’t focus on the "trying" aspect.

Examples -

  • 가서 알았어요 → I went and found out (neutral).

  • 가 보니까 알았어요 → I went (and tried), and as a result, I found out (personal experience).
