This grammar is used to express the time when an action or state occurs 'before a certain period of time' or ' before some action'.

It is equal to "before", "ago" in English.

It is used in the forms ‘Time 전에’, ‘Noun 전에’, and ‘Verb -기 전에’ in a sentence.

When following a Noun, 때 Is used.

For example:

When following the verb, The first step of 'V+기 전에' conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the base form of the verb.

  • Irrespective of the verb stem, whether it is ending with a final consonant  (받침)or vowel, we use 'V+기 전에'.

So let's take a verb 먹다(to eat). if you remove 다 from 먹다, 먹 (stem) is left. And then, look at the stem. So in the 먹, is ending with final consonant i.e. Patchim.
