Overview
If you’re planning to build a career in Korean Studies, research, or academia, the Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS) under the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is one of the most prestigious options in South Korea.
Backed by the Korean government, this institution is known for its research-driven approach, small class sizes, and strong academic mentorship. Every year, it attracts students from across the world who want to specialise deeply in Korean language, history, culture, and society.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the Fall 2026 admission guidelines, scholarships, eligibility, and application process.
About the Graduate School of Korean Studies
Established in 1980, GSKS has spent over four decades building a strong academic reputation in Korean Studies. Unlike regular universities, it focuses heavily on research and academic training, making it ideal for students who want to pursue teaching, research, or PhD-level work.
What makes it stand out is its 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio, allowing close mentorship from professors. Currently, the school hosts around 200 students, including over 100 international students from 38 countries, creating a diverse academic environment.
Beyond academics, students also receive support through writing clinics, tutoring, Korean language classes, and cultural immersion programs like temple stays and museum visits.
Programs and Majors Offered
GSKS offers both degree and non-degree programs:
- Master’s Degree (2 years)
- Doctoral Degree (3 years)
- Research Program (Non-degree, up to 1 year)
Students can choose from a wide range of majors in Humanities and Social Sciences, including Korean History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Anthropology, Religious Studies, Political Science, Sociology, and more.
There is also a special Korean Cultural Studies program, which is taught entirely in English and is ideal for students without advanced Korean proficiency.
Academic Structure & Learning Experience
The academic year is divided into two semesters (Spring and Fall), each lasting 15 weeks. While most courses are conducted in Korean, the English-medium track ensures accessibility for international students.
What truly enhances the experience is the opportunity to:
- Participate in research projects
- Work closely with professors
- Attend international academic conferences
- Build a strong academic portfolio
Scholarships and Financial Support
One of the biggest advantages of applying to AKS is its strong financial support system. All international students automatically receive a full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of their program.
On top of that, students may also be selected for additional funding:
POSCO Global Scholarship
This is a highly competitive scholarship offered to top students. It includes:
- Monthly stipend of 1,000,000 KRW
- One-time settlement grant
- Health insurance support
- Korean language training
Government Grant
Another major funding option provides:
- 800,000 KRW per month
- Up to 1 year (renewable)
Students are automatically considered for both scholarships based on their application performance, no separate application is required.
