When you think of Korea, what comes to your mind first? K-pop? K-dramas? Delicious food like kimchi and tteokbokki?
While all of these are true and loved worldwide, there's one more thing that Koreans are absolutely obsessed with — hiking! Yes, you heard it right.

Whether it's a young university student or a 70-year-old grandma, hiking is almost a national sport in South Korea. On weekends, you’ll see people in colorful hiking gear with trekking poles, ready to climb mountains. Even in cities like Seoul or Busan, locals wake up early and head to the nearby mountains for a morning hike — just like how we Indians go to parks or morning walks!

So why exactly are Koreans so obsessed with hiking? And more importantly, why should YOU (yes, you!) also give it a try? Let’s find out.

1. Mountains Are Everywhere in Korea

Korea is a mountainous country. Almost 70% of the land is covered with mountains! So no matter where you live — Seoul, Busan, or a small village — there’s always a mountain nearby. For Koreans, hiking isn’t just a weekend plan. It’s a lifestyle.

Even in Seoul, the capital city, mountains like Bukhansan and Inwangsan are just a bus ride away. You can start your day in the city and be climbing a mountain by afternoon. That’s how accessible hiking is in Korea!

For us Indians, it’s like living in Dehradun or Manali and stepping out to see the Himalayas in your backyard. The scenery is beautiful, the air is fresh, and the peaceful surroundings give you a break from busy city life.

2. It’s More Than Exercise — It’s a Social Event!

In India, going to the gym or doing yoga is often a solo activity. But in Korea, hiking is a group event. Families, friends, college students, even office workers go hiking together. They share food at the top, laugh, and take lots of photos with the scenic views.

And guess what? The food is a big part of the fun! Koreans carry gimbap (Korean sushi rolls), boiled eggs, kimchi, instant noodles, and of course, soju or makgeolli (Korean rice wine) to enjoy at the mountain top.

It’s like a mini picnic with a workout included. Imagine climbing a hill with your best friends and then sharing parathas or biryani on top while enjoying the view — that’s the vibe.

3. Hiking Is Good for Health (Body + Mind)

Koreans are known for their healthy skin and fit bodies, and hiking plays a big role. It’s a natural cardio exercise that doesn’t feel boring. You’re moving your body, breathing fresh air, and also challenging yourself to reach the top.

But it’s not just the body that benefits. Many Koreans say hiking helps clear their minds and relieve stress. After a tough week at work or studies, hiking is their way of relaxing. Some even say they get their best ideas while climbing a mountain!

In India, we also have beautiful hiking spots like Mcleodganj, Lonavala, and Mussoorie, but we often miss out on using them for regular fitness. Maybe it’s time to take inspiration from Korea?

4. Fashion Meets Function – Hiking Gear Craze

You’ll be surprised how fashionable hiking in Korea is! Korean hikers wear bright-colored jackets, hiking boots, caps, gloves, and even hiking makeup. Yes, it’s a thing.

For Indians used to plain workout wear, this is a fun and fresh change. Hiking becomes a chance to express your style while staying healthy. Brands like The North Face, Black Yak, and K2 are super popular in Korea — they even have hiking gear for pets!

It might sound funny at first, but this fashion adds excitement to the whole experience. Why not feel cool while climbing a hill?

5. Temples, Waterfalls, and Historical Sites on the Trails

Unlike city gyms, Korean hiking trails often include hidden temples, small waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and historical places along the way. Some trails even take you to UNESCO heritage sites like Seoraksan or Namsan Fortress.

This makes the hike educational and spiritual. It’s not just about burning calories — you also learn about Korean culture and connect with nature.

For Indian learners, this is super relatable. We also have temples in the hills, and spiritual hiking is common during yatras. Korea’s love for blending nature and history in hiking trails makes the whole journey much more meaningful.

6. K-Dramas Show It Too!

If you watch K-dramas, you must have noticed hiking scenes. In dramas like Crash Landing On You, Hospital Playlist, or Our Blues, characters often go hiking. It shows how deep hiking is in Korean lifestyle.

For fans of Korean dramas in India, hiking could be a cool way to feel closer to your favorite characters. Imagine recreating a scene with friends during your next mountain trip!

Ready to Hike the Korean Way?

So now you know — Koreans aren’t just climbing mountains for fun. Hiking is part of their culture, health routine, social life, and even fashion. It’s an all-in-one activity that brings joy, peace, and connection.

For Indian learners of Korean language and culture, hiking can be a great way to explore Korean-style wellness. And who knows? Maybe your next hobby could be hiking with a twist of kimchi and K-pop in your playlist.

So lace up your shoes, pack some snacks, call your friends, and go explore a mountain near you — the Korean way!

Who knew climbing a mountain could bring you closer to Korea?
