Let's learn how to use "V+(ㅇ)ㄹ까요 [Korean grammar]and make some example sentences.

V+(으)ㄹ까요 (Korean Grammar)

USE:

V+(으)ㄹ까요 Korean grammar pattern can be used in 3 different ways as given below.

1. While suggesting to do something together.

It's the most common use of this pattern and it translates to "Shall we...do...?" in English.

2. While asking for someone’s opinion, thoughts.

3. Used for asking someone's guess.

CONJUGATION RULE:

V+(으)ㄹ까요 grammar is used with verbs. The first step of ‘V+(으)ㄹ까요’ conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the base form of the verb.

  • If the verb stem is ending with a final consonant (받침), we use v+ 을까요.
  • If the verb stem is ending with any vowel( without patchim) then ‘v+ㄹ까요’ is used.

So let's take a verb 먹다(to eat). if you remove 다 from 먹다, 먹 (stem) is left. And then, look at the stem. So in the 먹, is ending with final consonant i.e. Patchim.

According to the conjugation rule, if the stem is end with Patchim, we add 을까요.

so it becomes 먹을까요.

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

1. While suggesting to do something together.

  • 오늘 같이 점심을 먹을까요? - Shall we eat lunch together today?
  • 같이 영화 볼까요? -Shall we watch a movie together?

2. While asking for someone’s opinion, thoughts

  • 오늘 점심에 뭐 먹을까요? - What shall we eat for lunch today?
  • 파티에 제가 뭘 가져갈까요? - What should I bring to the party?
  • 이번에 누구한테 줄까요? - To whom should I give this?

3. Used for asking someone's guess.

  • 오늘 비가 올까요? - Do you think it will rain today?
  • 버스 언제 올까요? - When do you think the bus will come?

TIP:

When talking with close friends or people younger to you, you can drop 요~ from (으))ㄹ까요 and can just use (으)ㄹ까 ending.

The sentences then can be formed like :

  • 파티에 제가 뭘 가져갈까? - What should I bring to the party?
  • 오늘 점심에 뭐 먹을까? - What shall we eat for lunch today?
