Today I will be talking about the job prospects in the Korean language field or I can say job prospects after Korean language learning. What type of jobs can you get and in which industry after learning Korean language ? How much can you expect to earn ?
This is a very over generalized question so it’s very difficult to give one answer. It’s like asking how much I can earn after learning computer programming or coding. You can become Bill Gates after learning coding or it can even become difficult to get you a 10,000 rupees per month job after learning Korean, it totally depends on how good you are and also the situation. But I’ll try to give the answer after looking at every scenario.
There are two type of people learning Korean language:
- The first type of people are the ones who are already expert in other fields like software developing, engineers, CA, doctors or anything else. They have a proper degree or expertise on other skills and can get a job in that field but they are learning foreign language as an extra additional skill so it’s giving an extra edge.
- The other type of people are those who are learning Korean language to make a complete career in that field. They want to Korean language to be their main skill. They want to work as a translator and language experts or interpreters.
In whatever type you are, the basic requirement is that you are just able to communicate properly in the day-to-day activities and you are an expert in some field.
Interpreters translate basic stuff . It’s not much difficult to get a job that pays you approximately 30,000 a month. I would say that a 4 lakhs package is pretty basic, that is the lowest you can get. There is no upper limit basically. With Korean language, if you have good communication skills, translation skills and you are already very good in your field then you can expect at least 7 to 8 lakhs plus. Really good people expertise in their field are getting 15 to 20 lakhs.
That was about the corporate job market. If you want to go to some other field say for example tourist guide then that’s a different scenario, their incomes can be very very high or very low depending on the networking skills, communication or other social skills. I know tourist guides who earn for like 45 lakhs per month and their Korean skills are not very exceptional. But they earn a lot of commissions from hotels, restaurants and shopping places because they handle very huge groups of tourists. They take from them every purchase the tourist makes. They get 30-40% commission on huge amounts of money but again that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
If you want to go into the field of freelancing that’s a different thing. When you work as a freelancer, translator or interpreter. For translators who are really they get on an average 3 rupees to 5 rupees per word for translation so it depends on your skill and your networking skills and everything.
If you are really good at it and have really good networks and contacts with some agencies and you have your online profiles on freelancer.com or other websites then it’s not very difficult to earn 30 to 50 thousand or even 1 lakh per month from your home. But it’s not easy to reach that level.
If you want to do some business related to Korean for example import or export or want to do some partnership with good people to do business with India and Korea that’s a totally different scenario. Those options are always there. Once you overcome the language barrier you can talk to a lot of Korean people and get a lot of opportunities. We will focus on the general job market that’s where most people go to companies.
There are a lot of companies in India who have their business in Korea and they hire people in India to support Korean clients, Korean customers so for example Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, etc. Most of the international companies, multinational companies hire Indian people to support Korean clients. There are good companies like Samsung, Hyundai, LG and many smaller companies like Cera gym . They also hire Korean language interpreters etc.
So what do you need to do to get those opportunities in the market ?
First is that you should have a topic level 3. Earlier they used to ask for a diploma certificate or bachelor’s degree or master’s degree for getting a job but right now if you have a TOPIK that’s all they ask. But you should have a graduation degree in general like BA, BCom. If you’re an expert in some other way that is very good.
TOPIK 3 is a decent level for you to get decent jobs and you can get many opportunities.
How long does it take to get TOPIK 3 and be job ready ?
If I talk about the course that is available on our website, http://www.learnkorean.in . We provide certificate courses in Korean language. We start from the very basics from learning the Korean alphabet ” Hangul ” up to level 4.
Generally we think that students should be able to pass TOPIK 3. The students who are very motivated and they are doing their part very well at home. They might be able to get level 3 after our 2ndblevel in 5 to 6 month of our course.
Generally in India those people who have done masters or bachelors in Korean language from universities have TOPIK level 3 knowledge. The percentage is very low. Maybe 25 or less. If you can get that in six months or in one year, that’s a very impressive thing I would say.
So if you invest 7 to 8 months and you are able to get a job ready you can get a job of 7 to 8 lakh per year that’s impressive. People invest 4 to 5 years doing Masters and then the average salary package in India is still 22- 25000 per month. I would say that there are a lot of opportunities in Korean language field and if you are already skilled in some other field, if you want to make your career in the language field specifically I think both scenarios are very good and I think there are a lot of opportunities for you.
