ADJ + 다면서요?- Korean Grammar

USE:

ADJ + 다면서요? is used when the speaker wants to confirm something they heard or recheck information that someone else told them.

It is similar to I heard that (someone/something) is …, is that true?”in English.

It is used in spoken Korean to express curiosity, surprise, or mild doubt.

Brief explanation in Hindi:

ADJ + 다면서요 का मतलब:

“सुना है कि…” / “आपने कहा था कि…” / “क्या सच में…?”

CONJUGATION RULE:

ADJ + 다면서요? grammar is used with adjectives. The first step of 'ADJ + 다면서요?' conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the adjective, Then you add  다면서요? to the adjective stem.

EXAMPLE SENTENCES: 

  1. 한국 겨울이 정말 춥다면서요?
    → I heard Korean winters are really cold. Is that true?
  2. 이 가게 커피가 맛있다면서요?
    → I heard the coffee at this café is good. Is that correct?
  3. 그 사람 성격이 좋다면서요?
    → I heard that person has a good personality. Is that true?
  4. 제주도 경치가 예쁘다면서요?
    → I heard Jeju Island has beautiful scenery. Is that true?

ADDITIONAL NOTEs:

  • The pattern –다면서요 is attached to adjectives directly (no extra conjugation).

  • For verbs, the form changes to –ㄴ/는다면서요.

  • For nouns, use –(이)라면서요.

  • The nuance depends on tone:

    • Rising tone (↗) → curious question

    • Falling tone (↘) → mildly doubtful / confirming
