V / A+ (으)ㄴ/는 데다가 (“on top of that…”)
USE:
(으)ㄴ/는 데다가 is used to add more information to what was mentioned before.
It means “in addition to…”, “not only…but also…”, or “on top of that…” in English.
It’s often used when both clauses have a similar tone — usually both positive or both negative.
CONJUGATION RULE:
(으)ㄴ/는 데다가 grammar is used with verbs and adjectives. The first step of ‘V / A+ (으)ㄴ/는 데다가' conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the verb or adjective, Then you add (으)ㄴ/는 데다가to the verb stem or adjective stem by following the steps given below -
- Attach –는 데다가 to verb stem directly.
- Attach –(으)ㄴ 데다가 to adjectives based on the batchim.
If Adjective ends in batchim add -ㄴ 데다가 ( 예쁜 데다가).
If Adjective ends in No batchim add -은 데다가 (많은 데다가).
EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
- 날씨가 추운 데다가 눈도 와요.
→ It’s cold, and on top of that, it’s snowing. 그 사람은 친절한 데다가 유머도 있어요.
→ That person is kind and also has a sense of humor.집이 넓은 데다가 교통도 편리해요.
→ The house is spacious, and transportation is convenient too.일이 많은 데다가 시간이 없어요.
→ I have a lot of work, and on top of that, I don’t have time.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
The two clauses should have similar feelings or tones (both good or both bad).
✅ 날씨가 좋고 따뜻한 데다가 경치도 아름다워요.
❌ 예쁜 데다가 피곤해요. (unnatural contrast)
It’s similar in meaning to (으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라, but (으)ㄴ/는 데다가 is a bit more natural in spoken Korean.
It can also be shortened in casual speech to just 데다가 or 데다.
