V + 게 되다 Korean Grammar
USE:
-게 되다 is used to express:
- A change of state → “to come to be…” / “to end up…”
- Something happened not by will, but by situation/circumstance → “it turned out that…”
Think of it as showing a natural result, change, or unintended action.
CONJUGATION RULE
Verb stem + -게 되다
- 가다 → 가게 됐어요 ( ended up going )
- 먹다 → 먹게 돼요 ( end up eating )
- 알다 → 알게 됐어요 ( came to know )
EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
- 한국에 살면서 한국 문화를 이해하게 됐어요.
(While living in Korea, I came to understand Korean culture. / कोरिया में रहते हुए मुझे कोरियन संस्कृति समझ में आने लगी।) - 열심히 공부해서 한국어를 잘하게 됐어요.
(I studied hard, so I came to speak Korean well. / मैंने मेहनत से पढ़ाई की, तो अब मैं कोरियन अच्छी बोलने लगा हूँ।) - 비가 와서 집에 일찍 가게 됐어요.
(It rained, so I ended up going home early. / बारिश हुई, इसलिए घर जल्दी जाना पड़ा।) - 친구의 소개로 그 사람을 알게 됐어요.
(I came to know that person through a friend’s introduction. / एक दोस्त के परिचय से मुझे वह व्यक्ति जानने को मिला।)
Key Notes
- Shows no direct intention → different from 그냥 V (simple action).
- 한국어를 배웠어요 = I learned Korean
- 한국어를 배우게 됐어요 = I came to learn Korean
- Often used in speeches, formal talk, life experiences.
