Let's learn how to use "N+동안, V+는 동안 [Korean grammar]" and make some example sentences.
N+ 동안,V+동안 (Korean Grammar)
USE:
This grammar is used to express the length of time starting when a certain action or behavior begins and lasting until it ends.
It is equal to "while doing", "during" in English.
CONJUGATION RULE:
When following a Noun, 동안 Is used.
"N+동안"
For example:
한 시간 동안 공부했어요. ( I study for one hour.)
When following the verb, The first step of 'V+는동안' conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the base form of the verb. And then directly add -는 동안 to the verb.
So let's take a verb 먹다(to eat). if you remove 다 from 먹다, 먹 (stem) is left. And then, look at the stem. So in the 먹, you'll directly add- 는 동안.
so it becomes 먹는 동안.
So, if you want say- "It was really hot while eating the food."
Then, you'll say- "점심을 먹는 동안 아주 더웠어요."
EXAMPLE SENTENCES:
- 얼마 동안 한국에 있을 거 예요?
How long will you be in Korea? - 방학 동안 아르바이트를 해요.
I work part-time during vacation. - 밥 먹는 동안 드라마를 봐요.
I watch TV while eating food. - 비행기로 2시간 동안 쯤 걸릴 거예요.
It will take around two hours by plane. - 요리하는 동안 음악을 들어요.
I listen to the music while cooking. - 자동차를 운전하는 동안 음악을 들어요.
I listen to music when driving. - 미국에 사는 동안 영어를 연습 많이 했어요.
While living in USA, I Practice English a lot.
