Let's learn how to use "N+전에, V+기전에 [Korean grammar]and make some example sentences.

N+ 때,V+을 때 (Korean Grammar)

USE:

This grammar is used to express the time when an action or state occurs 'before a certain period of time' or ' before some action'.

It is equal to "before", "ago" in English.

It is used in the forms ‘Time 전에’, ‘Noun 전에’, and ‘Verb -기 전에’ in a sentence.

CONJUGATION RULE:

When following a Noun, 때 Is used.

"N+전에"

For example:

수업 전에 숙제를 해요. ( He do his HW before the class.)

When following the verb, The first step of 'V+기 전에' conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the base form of the verb.


  • Irrespective of the verb stem, whether it is ending with a final consonant  (받침)or vowel, we use 'V+기 전에'.

So let's take a verb 먹다(to eat). if you remove 다 from 먹다, 먹 (stem) is left. And then, look at the stem. So in the 먹, is ending with final consonant i.e. Patchim.

According to the conjugation rule, if the stem is end with Patchim, we add기 전에.

so it becomes 기 전에.

So, if you want say- "I watch TV before eating the food." 

Then, you'll say- "밥을 기 전에, Tv를 봐요."

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  • 여름 전에 고향에 가요.
    I'll go to my hometown before summer.
  • 방학 전에 아르바이트를 해요.
    I work part-time before vacation.
  • 밥 먹기 전에 드라마를 봐요.
    I watch TV before eating food.
  • 수업 끝나기 전에 연습 다 했어요.
    I practice all before class end.
  • 요리하기 전에 음악을 들어요.
    I listen to the music before cooking.
  • 자동차를 운전하기 전에 세차 했어요.
    I washed my car before driving.
  • 저녁 식사 하기 전에 운동해요.
    I do exercise Before dinner.
  • 미국에 오기 전에 영어를 배웠어요.
     I learned English before coming to USA.
