V+게 되다 Korean Grammar

Let's learn how to use the  V + 게 되다 with some simple and easy-to-understand example sentences.

 V + 게 되다 Korean Grammar

USE:

-게 되다 is used to express:

  1. A change of state“to come to be…” / “to end up…” 
  2. Something happened not by will, but by situation/circumstance“it turned out that…” 

Think of it as showing a natural result, change, or unintended action.

CONJUGATION RULE


Verb stem + -게 되다

  • 가다 → 가게 됐어요 ( ended up going )
  • 먹다 → 먹게 돼요 ( end up eating )
  • 알다 → 알게 됐어요 ( came to know )

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:


  • 한국에 살면서 한국 문화를 이해하게 됐어요.
    (While living in Korea, I came to understand Korean culture. / कोरिया में रहते हुए मुझे कोरियन संस्कृति समझ में आने लगी।)
  • 열심히 공부해서 한국어를 잘하게 됐어요.
    (I studied hard, so I came to speak Korean well. / मैंने मेहनत से पढ़ाई की, तो अब मैं कोरियन अच्छी बोलने लगा हूँ।)
  • 비가 와서 집에 일찍 가게 됐어요.
    (It rained, so I ended up going home early. / बारिश हुई, इसलिए घर जल्दी जाना पड़ा।)
  • 친구의 소개로 그 사람을 알게 됐어요.
    (I came to know that person through a friend’s introduction. / एक दोस्त के परिचय से मुझे वह व्यक्ति जानने को मिला।)

Key Notes

  • Shows no direct intention → different from 그냥 V (simple action).
    • 한국어를 배웠어요 = I learned Korean 
    • 한국어를 배우게 됐어요 = I came to learn Korean 
  • Often used in speeches, formal talk, life experiences.
