Let's learn how to use Korean grammar V+(으)려면 with conjugation rules and some simple real-life examples.

V+(으)려면 [Korean Grammar]

USE:

V+(으)려면 used when you want to express a condition for doing something.

It is equivalent to "If you intend to do (Verb)" or "In order to do (Verb)" in English.

It is used to express a plan or intention to do something in the 1st clause and the condition to fulfill the plan or intention in the 2nd clause = if you want/ intend to… then you should...

Brief Hindi Explanation -

"V + (으)려면" का मतलब है:

 "अगर Verb करना है तो…"(Agar verb karna hai toh..)
"Verb करने के लिए"( Verb karne ke liye..)

CONJUGATION RULE:

V+(으)려면  grammar is used with verbs. The first step of ‘V+(으)려면’ conjugation is to remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the verb, Then you add (으)려면  to the verb stem.

If the verb stem ends in a consonant → 으려면 ( 가 - 가려면 )

If the verb stem ends in a vowel → 려면 ( 먹다 - 먹으려면 )

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  1. 시험에 합격하려면 열심히 공부해야 해요.
    If you want to pass the exam, you need to study hard.
  1. 밥을 먹으려면 식당에 가야 해요.
    If you want to eat, you should go to a restaurant.
  1. 서울에 가려면 기차를 타야 해요.
    If you want to go to Seoul, you should take a train.
  2. 새로운 식당 음식을 먹어 보니까 맛이 별로였어요.
    After trying the new restaurant’s food, I found the taste wasn’t so good.
